We used photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and first-principles calculations to investigate GaN doped with Mg, Be, and implanted with Ca. The PL spectra revealed distinct red emission bands (RLA, where A = Be, Mg, and Ca) with maxima between 1.68 and 1.82 eV, each associated with a specific impurity. These bands consistently appeared alongside the green GL2 PL band at 2.33 eV, attributed to nitrogen vacancy (VN). Our calculations suggest that these bands result from recombination via defect complexes of group-II acceptors substituting for Ga with VN (AGaVN, A = Be, Mg, and Ca). The experimental + / 0 transition levels for these complexes were estimated to be 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0 eV above the valence band maximum for Mg-, Be-, and Ca-containing complexes, respectively. The radiative recombination is facilitated by excited donor states located close to the conduction band minimum. Furthermore, our theory predicts that ZnGaVN and CdGaVN are stable and possess similar properties, although, no PL was detected from these defect complexes. The rotational relaxation behavior of D2(1,12) in a D2–N2 mixture was investigated using coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) technique. The rovibrational level v = 1 and J = 12 of D2 was selectively excited through stimulated Raman pumping while monitoring the temporal evolution of population for D2(1, J ≤ 12) molecules using time-resolved CARS spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that the rotational relaxation processes of D2(1,12) encompass both multi-quantum relaxation and continuous single-quantum relaxation. When α, the molar ratio of N2, is less than 0.5, D2(1,12) predominantly undergoes a single quantum relaxation process transition. However, when α ≥ 0.5, the multi-quantum relaxation mechanism gradually predominates. The total rotational relaxation rate coefficients of D2(1,12) collisions with N2 and D2 at 295 K were determined to be 3.974 × 10−14 and 1.179 × 10−14 cm3 s−1, respectively. The temperature dependence of rotational relaxation rate of D2(1,12) was investigated within the temperature range of 295–453 K. With increasing temperature, the dominant relaxation process exhibited an accelerated behavior, while the minor relaxation process remained largely unaffected. The rotational temperature of the D2 molecule at various N2 molar ratios was determined through the utilization of Boltzmann plots. The rotational temperature undergoes a rapid decline within 2 μs, corresponding to the near-resonant rotation–vibration relaxation process of D2(1,12) collisions with N2. The system reaches a quasi-equilibrium state when the delay time is 3 μs. A three-temperature collisional-radiative model for shock-heated nitrogen–argon mixtures is developed to facilitate the study of nonequilibrium electronic excitation and ionization behind strong shock waves. Model predictions accurately reproduce measurements of N 2 dissociation for mixtures of 2%–10% N 2 in argon, with some discrepancies observed for 20% N 2 mixtures. Potential causes of the discrepancies are discussed. Net dissociation in mixtures containing 20% N 2 is significantly impacted by the dissociation of N 2 (A), the first excited electronic state of N 2 , indicating that molecular electronic excitation can affect net dissociation in shock-heated nitrogen flows. The collisional-radiative model successfully predicts the three-stage behavior and induction time observed in concentration measurements of atomic nitrogen in its fourth excited state, the 3 s 4 P level, behind reflected shocks. Mechanisms for the observed behavior are discussed, which deviate from those inferred using a simpler kinetic model. Excited state number density predictions are strongly influenced by the modeling of radiation self-absorption and the inclusion of the measured non-ideal pressure rise. At higher N 2 concentrations, the measured data indicate increased efficiency of atomic nitrogen electronic excitation in collisions with N as compared to collisions with N 2 and Ar. A global sensitivity analysis of the excited state predictions is then performed, identifying the processes in the kinetic model that most sensitively influence the predicted excited state time history and further clarifying the dominant mechanisms affecting the experimental observables. Biological nitrogen fixation by free-living bacteria and rhizobial symbiosis with legumes plays a key role in sustainable crop production. Here, we study how different crop combinations influence the interaction between peanut plants and their rhizosphere microbiota via metabolite deposition and functional responses of free-living and symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Based on a long-term (8 year) diversified cropping field experiment, we find that peanut co-cultured with maize and oilseed rape lead to specific changes in peanut rhizosphere metabolite profiles and bacterial functions and nodulation. Flavonoids and coumarins accumulate due to the activation of phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathways in peanuts. These changes enhance the growth and nitrogen fixation activity of free-living bacterial isolates, and root nodulation by symbiotic Bradyrhizobium isolates. Peanut plant root metabolites interact with Bradyrhizobium isolates contributing to initiate nodulation. Our findings demonstrate that tailored intercropping could be used to improve soil nitrogen availability through changes in the rhizosphere microbiome and its functions.

Global potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from soil are accelerating, with increases in the proportion of reactive nitrogen emitted as N2O, i.e., N2O emission factor (EF). Yet, the primary controls and underlying mechanisms of EFs remain unresolved. Based on two independent but complementary global syntheses, and three field studies determining effects of acidity on N2O EFs and soil denitrifying microorganisms, we show that soil pH predominantly controls N2O EFs and emissions by affecting the denitrifier community composition. Analysis of 5438 paired data points of N2O emission fluxes revealed a hump-shaped relationship between soil pH and EFs, with the highest EFs occurring in moderately acidic soils that favored N2O-producing over N2O-consuming microorganisms, and induced high N2O emissions. Our results illustrate that soil pH has a unimodal relationship with soil denitrifiers and EFs, and the net N2O emission depends on both the N2O/(N2O + N2) ratio and overall denitrification rate. These findings can inform strategies to predict and mitigate soil N2O emissions under future nitrogen input scenarios.

A key control on the magnitude of coastal eutrophication is the degree to which currents quickly transport nitrogen derived from human sources away from the coast to the open ocean before eutrophication develops. In the Southern California Bight (SCB), an upwelling-dominated eastern boundary current ecosystem, anthropogenic nitrogen inputs increase algal productivity and cause subsurface acidification and oxygen (O 2 ) loss along the coast. However, the extent of anthropogenic influence on eutrophication beyond the coastal band, and the physical transport mechanisms and biogeochemical processes responsible for these effects are still poorly understood. Here, we use a submesoscale-resolving numerical model to document the detailed biogeochemical mass balance of nitrogen, carbon and oxygen, their physical transport, and effects on offshore habitats. Despite management of terrestrial nutrients that has occurred in the region over the last 20 years, coastal eutrophication continues to persist. The input of anthropogenic nutrients promote an increase in productivity, remineralization and respiration offshore, with recurrent O 2 loss and pH decline in a region located 30-90 km from the mainland. During 2013 to 2017, the spatially averaged 5-year loss rate across the Bight was 1.3 mmol m -3 O 2 , with some locations losing on average up to 14.2 mmol m -3 O 2 . The magnitude of loss is greater than model uncertainty assessed from data-model comparisons and from quantification of intrinsic variability. This phenomenon persists for 4 to 6 months of the year over an area of 278,40 km 2 ( ∼ 30% of SCB area). These recurrent features of acidification and oxygen loss are associated with cross-shore transport of nutrients by eddies and plankton biomass and their accumulation and retention within persistent eddies offshore within the SCB.

Realization of planar tetracoordinate arrangements of nitrogen atoms is challenging because their preference for localized bonding (caused by its high electronegativity) makes them typically tricoordinate. This is especially true for the more electronegative oxygen atoms. Herein, we computationally designed two clusters NBe4H4− and OBe4H4; they contain a planar tetracoordinate nitrogen (ptN) and planar tetracoordinate oxygen (ptO) atom, respectively. Remarkably, the former is a dynamically stable global minimum, while the latter is not. The bonding analysis proves that planar tetracoordination in NBe4H4− favors over tricoordination because of the presence of multicenter delocalized bonds. In contrast, the planar tricoordination dominates due to its weak delocalized bonding ability of oxygen in the OBe4H4 cluster. Moreover, the 6σ/2π double aromaticity due to multicenter delocalized bonds allows the NBe4H4− cluster to obtain additional stability. The effect of inserting a nm-scale layer of Zn(Si,Ge)N2 into an AlGaN quantum well structure designed for light emission in the wavelength range from 255 to 305 nm is investigated here. The enhanced confinement of the hole within the quantum well results in an enhancement of the overlap of the hole and electron wave functions, resulting in an enhancement of the radiative recombination rate. In this theoretical calculation, for emission at a 270 nm wavelength, the enhancement in the wavefunction overlap can reach a factor of 7 when compared to an AlGaN quantum well device specifically engineered for optimal emission at the identical wavelength. Increases of almost an order of magnitude in both the peak spontaneous emission intensity and the radiative recombination rate are predicted. The peak emission wavelength can be tuned from 255 to 305 nm by adjusting the width and/or the composition of the inserted layer. The precise determination of the bond dissociation energy of N2 is crucial for thermochemistry database and theoretical calculations. However, there has been ongoing debate regarding its exact value. In this study, we used the velocity map imaging method combined with an extreme ultraviolet laser to measure the threshold fragment yield (TFY) spectra of N2 in the N(2D) + N(2D) photodissociation channels. By integrating the signals within a small circular area on the fragment velocity map images, we were able to obtain TFY spectra at nine different dissociation thresholds. These spectra are rotational state-resolved for the N2(J″) molecules and spin–orbit state-resolved for the dissociation channels involving N(2D) fragments. By employing the Wigner threshold law to simulate the TFY spectra and conducting statistical analysis on the comprehensive dataset, we determined the N2 bond dissociation energy to be 78 691.09 ± 0.15 cm−1. The biological reduction of N2 to ammonia requires the ATP-dependent, sequential delivery of electrons from the Fe protein to the MoFe protein of nitrogenase. It has been demonstrated that CdS nanocrystals can replace the Fe protein to deliver photoexcited electrons to the MoFe protein. Herein, light-activated electron delivery within the CdS:MoFe protein complex was achieved in the frozen state, revealing that all the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) active E-state intermediates in the catalytic cycle can be trapped and characterized by EPR spectroscopy. Prior to illumination, the CdS:MoFe protein complex EPR spectrum was composed of a S = 3/2 rhombic signal (g = 4.33, 3.63, and 2.01) consistent with the FeMo-cofactor in the resting state, E0. Illumination for sequential 1-h periods at 233 K under 1 atm of N2 led to a cumulative attenuation of E0 by 75%. This coincided with the appearance of S = 3/2 and S = 1/2 signals assigned to two-electron (E2) and four-electron (E4) reduced states of the FeMo-cofactor, together with additional S = 1/2 signals consistent with the formation of E6 and E8 states. Simulations of EPR spectra allowed quantification of the different E-state populations, along with mapping of these populations onto the Lowe–Thorneley kinetic scheme. The outcome of this work demonstrates that the photochemical delivery of electrons to the MoFe protein can be used to populate all of the EPR active E-state intermediates of the nitrogenase MoFe protein cycle. Molecular dynamics simulations in the microcanonical ensemble are performed to study the collapse of a bubble in liquid water using the single-site mW and the four-site TIP4P/2005 water models. To study system size effects, simulations for pure water systems are performed using periodically replicated simulation boxes with linear dimensions, L, ranging from 32 to 512 nm with the largest systems containing 8.7 × 106 and 4.5 × 109 molecules for the TIP4P/2005 and mW water models, respectively. The computationally more efficient mW water model allows us to reach converging behavior when the bubble dynamics results are plotted in reduced units, and the limiting behavior can be obtained through linear extrapolation in L−1. Qualitative differences are observed between simulations with the mW and TIP4P/2005 water models, but they can be explained by the models' differences in predicted viscosity and surface tension. Although bubble collapse occurs on time scales of only hundreds of picoseconds, the system sizes used here are sufficiently large to obtain bubble dynamics consistent with the Rayleigh–Plesset equation when using the models' thermophysical properties as input. For the conditions explored here, extreme heating of the interfacial water molecules near the time of collapse is observed for the larger mW water systems (but the model underpredicts the viscosity), whereas heating is less pronounced for the TIP4P/2005 water systems because its larger viscosity contribution slows the collapse dynamics. The presence of nitrogen within the bubble only starts to affect bubble dynamics near the very end of the initial collapse, leading to an incomplete collapse and strong rebound for the mW water model. Although nitrogen is non-condensable at 300 K, it becomes highly compressed and reaches a liquid-like density near the collapse point. We find that the dissolution of nitrogen is much slower than the movement of the collapsing water front, and the re-expansion of the dense nitrogen droplet gives rise to bubble rebound. The incompatibility of the collapse and dissolution time scales should be considered for continuum-scale modeling of bubble dynamics. The development of cereal crops with high nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is a priority for worldwide agriculture. In addition to conventional plant breeding and genetic engineering, the use of the plant microbiome offers another approach to improving crop NUE. To gain insight into the bacterial communities associated with sorghum lines that differ in NUE, a field experiment was designed comparing 24 diverse Sorghum bicolor lines under sufficient and deficient nitrogen (N). Amplicon sequencing and untargeted gas chromatography-mass spectrometry were used to characterize the bacterial communities and the root metabolome associated with sorghum genotypes varying in sensitivity to low N. We demonstrated that N stress and sorghum type (energy, sweet, and grain sorghum) significantly impacted the root-associated bacterial communities and root metabolite composition of sorghum. We found a positive correlation between sorghum NUE and bacterial richness and diversity in the rhizosphere. The greater alpha diversity in high NUE lines was associated with the decreased abundance of a dominant bacterial taxon, Pseudomonas. Multiple strong correlations were detected between root metabolites and rhizosphere bacterial communities in response to low N stress. This indicates that the shift in the sorghum microbiome due to low N is associated with the root metabolites of the host plant. Taken together, our findings suggest that host genetic regulation of root metabolites plays a role in defining the root-associated microbiome of sorghum genotypes differing in NUE and tolerance to low N stress.IMPORTANCEThe development of crops that are more nitrogen use-efficient (NUE) is critical for the future of the enhanced sustainability of agriculture worldwide. This objective has been pursued mainly through plant breeding and plant molecular engineering, but these approaches have had only limited success. Therefore, a different strategy that leverages soil microbes needs to be fully explored because it is known that soil microbes improve plant growth through multiple mechanisms. To design approaches that use the soil microbiome to increase NUE, it will first be essential to understand the relationship among soil microbes, root metabolites, and crop productivity. Using this approach, we demonstrated that certain key metabolites and specific microbes are associated with high and low sorghum NUE in a field study. This important information provides a new path forward for developing crop genotypes that have increased NUE through the positive contribution of soil microbes.

Estuarine wetlands harbor considerable carbon stocks, but rising sea levels could affect their ability to sequester soil carbon as well as their potential to emit methane (CH4). While sulfate loading from seawater intrusion may reduce CH4 production due to the higher energy yield of microbial sulfate reduction, existing studies suggest other factors are likely at play. Our study of 11 wetland complexes spanning a natural salinity and productivity gradient across the San Francisco Bay and Delta found that while CH4 fluxes generally declined with salinity, they were highest in oligohaline wetlands (ca. 3-ppt salinity). Methanogens and methanogenesis genes were weakly correlated with CH4 fluxes but alone did not explain the highest rates observed. Taxonomic and functional gene data suggested that other microbial guilds that influence carbon and nitrogen cycling need to be accounted for to better predict CH4 fluxes at landscape scales. Higher methane production occurring near the freshwater boundary with slight salinization (and sulfate incursion) might result from increased sulfate-reducing fermenter and syntrophic populations, which can produce substrates used by methanogens. Moreover, higher salinities can solubilize ionically bound ammonium abundant in the lower salinity wetland soils examined here, which could inhibit methanotrophs and potentially contribute to greater CH4 fluxes observed in oligohaline sediments.IMPORTANCELow-level salinity intrusion could increase CH4 flux in tidal freshwater wetlands, while higher levels of salinization might instead decrease CH4 fluxes. High CH4 emissions in oligohaline sites are concerning because seawater intrusion will cause tidal freshwater wetlands to become oligohaline. Methanogenesis genes alone did not account for landscape patterns of CH4 fluxes, suggesting mechanisms altering methanogenesis, methanotrophy, nitrogen cycling, and ammonium release, and increasing decomposition and syntrophic bacterial populations could contribute to increases in net CH4 flux at oligohaline salinities. Improved understanding of these influences on net CH4 emissions could improve restoration efforts and accounting of carbon sequestration in estuarine wetlands. More pristine reference sites may have older and more abundant organic matter with higher carbon:nitrogen compared to wetlands impacted by agricultural activity and may present different interactions between salinity and CH4. This distinction might be critical for modeling efforts to scale up biogeochemical process interactions in estuarine wetlands.

Plant root-nodule symbiosis (RNS) with mutualistic nitrogen-fixing bacteria is restricted to a single clade of angiosperms, the Nitrogen-Fixing Nodulation Clade (NFNC), and is best understood in the legume family. Nodulating species share many commonalities, explained either by divergence from a common ancestor over 100 million years ago or by convergence following independent origins over that same time period. Regardless, comparative analyses of diverse nodulation syndromes can provide insights into constraints on nodulation-what must be acquired or cannot be lost for a functional symbiosis-and the latitude for variation in the symbiosis. However, much remains to be learned about nodulation, especially outside of legumes. Here, we employed a large-scale phylogenomic analysis across 88 species, complemented by 151 RNA-seq libraries, to elucidate the evolution of RNS. Our phylogenomic analyses further emphasize the uniqueness of the transcription factor NIN as a master regulator of nodulation and identify key mutations that affect its function across the NFNC. Comparative transcriptomic assessment revealed nodule-specific upregulated genes across diverse nodulating plants, while also identifying nodule-specific and nitrogen-response genes. Approximately 70% of symbiosis-related genes are highly conserved in the four representative species, whereas defense-related and host-range restriction genes tend to be lineage specific. Our study also identified over 900 000 conserved non-coding elements (CNEs), over 300 000 of which are unique to sampled NFNC species. NFNC-specific CNEs are enriched with the active H3K9ac mark and are correlated with accessible chromatin regions, thus representing a pool of candidate regulatory elements for genes involved in RNS. Collectively, our results provide novel insights into the evolution of nodulation and lay a foundation for engineering of RNS traits in agriculturally important crops.

Understanding plant-microbe interactions requires examination of root exudation under nutrient stress using standardized and reproducible experimental systems. We grew Brachypodium distachyon hydroponically in fabricated ecosystem devices (EcoFAB 2.0) under three inorganic nitrogen forms (nitrate, ammonium, and ammonium nitrate), followed by nitrogen starvation. Analyses of exudates with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, biomass, medium pH, and nitrogen uptake showed EcoFAB 2.0's low intratreatment data variability. Furthermore, the three inorganic nitrogen forms caused differential exudation, generalized by abundant amino acids-peptides and alkaloids. Comparatively, nitrogen deficiency decreased nitrogen-containing compounds but increased shikimates-phenylpropanoids. Subsequent bioassays with two shikimates-phenylpropanoids (shikimic and p-coumaric acids) on soil bacteria or Brachypodium seedlings revealed their distinct capacity to regulate both bacterial and plant growth. Our results suggest that (i) Brachypodium alters exudation in response to nitrogen status, which can affect rhizobacterial growth, and (ii) EcoFAB 2.0 is a valuable standardized plant research tool.

Diverse phytoplankton modulate the coupling between the ocean carbon and nutrient cycles through life-history traits such as cell size, elemental quotas, and ratios. Biodiversity is mostly considered at broad functional levels, but major phytoplankton lineages are themselves highly diverse. As an example, Synechococcus is found in nearly all ocean regions, and we demonstrate contains extensive intraspecific variation. A quasi-atomic orbital analysis of the halogen bonded NH3⋯XF complexes (X = F, Cl, Br, and I) is performed to gain insight into the electronic properties associated with these σ-hole interactions. It is shown that significant sharing of electrons between the nitrogen lone pair of the ammonia molecule and the XF molecule occurs, resulting in a weakening of the X–F bond. In addition, the N–X bond shows increasing covalent character as the size of the halogen atom X increases. While the Mulliken outer complex NH3⋯XF appears to be overall the main species, the strength of the covalent interaction of the N–X bond becomes increasingly similar to that of the N–X bond in the [NH3X]+ cation as the size of X increases. Inspired by the single-bonded nitrogen chains stabilized by tetravalent cerium, pentavalent tantalum, and hexavalent tungsten atoms, we explored the possibility of single-bonded nitrogen polymorphs stabilized by trivalent lanthanum ions. To achieve this, we utilized the crystal structure search method on the phase diagram of binary La–N compounds. We identified three novel thermodynamically stable phases, the C2/c LaN3, P-1 LaN4, and P-1 LaN8. Among them, the C2/c phase with infinite helical poly-N6 chains becomes thermodynamically stable above 50 GPa. Each nitrogen atom in the poly-N6 chain acquires one extra electron, and the spiral chain is purely single-bonded. The C2/c phase has an indirect band gap of ∼1.6 eV at 60 GPa. Notably, the band gap exhibits non-monotonic behavior, decreases first and then increases with increasing pressure. This abnormal behavior is attributed to the significant bonding of two La–N bonds at around 35 GPa. Phonon spectrum calculations and AIMD simulations have confirmed that the C2/c phase can be quenched to ambient conditions with slight distortion, and it exhibits excellent detonation properties. Additionally, we also discovered armchair-like nitrogen chains in LaN4 and the armchair and zigzag-like mixed nitrogen chains in LaN8. These results provide valuable insights into the electronic and bonding properties of nitrides under high pressure and may have important implications for the design and development of novel functional materials. Phenylpropiolic acid (C6H5C≡CCOOH, PPA) isolated in nitrogen and xenon cryogenic matrices was studied by infrared spectroscopy. The experimental studies were complemented by a series of quantum chemical calculations carried out at the density functional theory (B3LYP) and MP2 levels of theory (with different basis sets). The calculations predicted the existence of two planar PPA conformers, differing in the arrangement of the carboxylic group. The higher-energy trans-PPA conformer has a negligible population in the gas phase at room temperature and was prepared in situ in the N2 cryomatrix through vibrationally-induced rotamerization of the lower-energy cis-PPA conformer, achieved using selective narrowband infrared excitation of the OH stretching coordinate of the latter species. Broadband UV (λ > 235 nm) irradiation of matrix-isolated cis-PPA was also undertaken, leading to the observation of cis-PPA → trans-PPA isomerization. No other UV-induced photoreactions were observed. The in situ generated trans-PPA conformer was found to decay back to cis-PPA in the dark by tunneling, and its lifetimes under different experimental conditions were determined. We present an IR-PD study of tantalum cluster adsorbate complexes [Tan(N2)m]+, abbreviated (n,m), n = 5–8. We utilize infrared spectroscopy of isolated and size selected clusters as prepared and characterized by a cryogenic tandem ion trap setup, and we augment our experiments with quantum chemical simulations at the level of density functional theory. The cluster adsorbate complexes (n,m) reveal vibrational bands above 2000 cm−1, which indicate end-on coordinated μ1-N2 oscillators, and bands below 2000 cm−1, which indicate side-on μ2-κN:κN,N coordinated ones. We observe a general increase in spectral complexity and an inhomogeneous broadening, mainly towards the red, at certain points of N2 loading m, which originates from an increasingly higher amount of double and triple N2 coordination at Ta sites, eventually at all of them. Other than the small tantalum clusters Tan+, n = 2–4, the IR-PD spectra of the initial N2 adsorbate species (n,1), n = 5–8, provide strong evidence for a lack of spontaneous N2 cleavage. Spontaneous N2 cleavage by Tan+, n = 5–8, seems suppressed. Therefore, the ability of a small Ta cluster to cleave dinitrogen disappears with one more tantalum core atom. The study of stepwise N2 adsorption on size selected Tan+, n = 5–8 clusters revealed adsorption limits m(max) of [Tan(N2)m]+ that are independent of cluster size within this size range. Cryo-adsorption kinetics at 26 K allowed for kinetic fits to consecutive N2 adsorption steps, and the fits revealed significant N2 desorption rates upon higher N2 loads, and the cluster adsorbate complexes eventually reached equilibrium. Some enhanced N2 desorption rates point towards likely adsorbate shell reorganization, and there is also some evidence for the coexistence of isomeric cluster adsorbate complexes. We investigate small tantalum clusters Tan+, n = 2–4, for their capability to cleave N2 adsorption spontaneously. We utilize infrared photon dissociation (IR-PD) spectroscopy of isolated and size selected clusters under cryogenic conditions within a buffer gas filled ion trap, and we augment our experiments by quantum chemical simulations (at DFT level). All Tan+ clusters, n = 2–4, seem to cleave N2 efficiently. We confirm and extend a previous study under ambient conditions on Ta2+ cluster [Geng et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 115, 11680–11687 (2018)]. Our cryo studies and the concomitant DFT simulations of the tantalum trimer Ta3+ suggest cleavage of the first and activation of the second and third N2 molecule across surmountable barriers and along much-involved multidimensional reaction paths. We unravel the underlying reaction processes and the intermediates involved. The study of the N2 adsorbate complexes of Ta4+ presented here extends our earlier study and previously published spectra from (4,m), m = 1–5 [Fries et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 23(19), 11345–11354 (2021)], up to m = 12. We confirm the priory published double activation and nitride formation, succeeded by single side-on N2 coordination. Significant red shifts of IR-PD bands from these side-on coordinated μ2-κN:κN,N N2 ligands correlate with the degree of tilting towards the second coordinating Ta center. All subsequently attaching N2 adsorbates onto Ta4+ coordinate in an end-on fashion, and we find clear evidence for co-existence of end-on coordination isomers. The study of stepwise N2 adsorption revealed adsorption limits m(max) of [Tan(N2)m]+ which increase with n, and kinetic fits revealed significant N2 desorption rates upon higher N2 loads. The enhanced absolute rate constants of the very first adsorbate steps kabs(n,0) of the small Ta3+ and Ta4+ clusters independently suggest dissociative N2 adsorption and likely N2 cleavage into Ta nitrides. We present theory and a simulation framework to model three-body collisions and gas phase recombination in dilute atom/diatom mixtures of pure oxygen (O/O2) and nitrogen (N/N2) using the Quasi-Classical Trajectory method. We formulate a three-body collision rate constant based on the lifetimes of binary collisions and initialize three-body collisions by sampling the arrival time of a third body within the lifetimes of pre-simulated binary collisions. We use this method to calculate distributions of recombined product energies, probabilities of recombination, and recombination rate constants through different collision pathways. Long-lived binary atom-diatom collisions are observed, but are too rare to play a dominant role in the recombination process for shock-heated air near the equilibrium conditions studied. The resulting recombination rate constants are within an order of magnitude of the predictions of detailed balance. Notably, the recombination simulation framework does not appeal to the principle of detailed balance and could be useful for studying conditions far from equilibrium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biological dinitrogen (N2) fixation supplies nitrogen to the oceans, supporting primary productivity, and is carried out by some bacteria and archaea referred to as diazotrophs. Cyanobacteria are conventionally considered to be the major contributors to marine N2 fixation, but non-cyanobacterial diazotrophs (NCDs) have been shown to be distributed throughout ocean ecosystems. However, the biogeochemical significance of marine NCDs has not been demonstrated. This review synthesizes multiple datasets, drawing from cultivation-independent molecular techniques and data from extensive oceanic expeditions, to provide a comprehensive view into the diversity, biogeography, ecophysiology, and activity of marine NCDs. A NCD nifH gene catalog was compiled containing sequences from both PCR-based and PCR-free methods, identifying taxa for future studies. NCD abundances from a novel database of NCD nifH-based abundances were colocalized with environmental data, unveiling distinct distributions and environmental drivers of individual taxa. Mechanisms that NCDs may use to fuel and regulate N2 fixation in response to oxygen and fixed nitrogen availability are discussed, based on a metabolic analysis of recently available Tara Oceans expedition data. The integration of multiple datasets provides a new perspective that enhances understanding of the biology, ecology, and biogeography of marine NCDs and provides tools and directions for future research.

Aquatic ecosystems world-wide are being irreversibly altered, suggesting that new and innovative management strategies are necessary to improve ecosystem function and sustainability. In river ecosystems degraded by dams environmental flows and selective withdrawal (SWD) infrastructure have been used to improve habitat for native species. Yet, few studies have quantified nutrient and food web export subsidies from upstream reservoirs, despite their potential to subsidize downstream riverine food webs. We sampled nutrient, phytoplankton, and zooplankton concentrations in outflows from the Shasta-Keswick reservoir complex in Northern California over a 12-month period to understand how SWD operation and internal reservoir conditions interact to influence subsidies to the Sacramento River. We found that nutrients, phytoplankton, and zooplankton were continuously exported from Shasta Reservoir to the Sacramento River and that gate operations at Shasta Dam were important in controlling exports. Further, our results indicate that gate operations and water-export depth strongly correlated with zooplankton community exports, whereas internal reservoir conditions (mixing and residence time) controlled concentrations of exported zooplankton biomass and chlorophyll a. These results demonstrate that reservoirs can be an important source of nutrient and food web subsidies and that selective withdrawal infrastructure may provide a valuable management tool to control ecosystem-level productivity downstream of dams.

Evolution of nitrogen under shock compression up to 100 GPa is revisited via molecular dynamics simulations using a machine-learned interatomic potential. The model is shown to be capable of recovering the structure, dynamics, speciation, and kinetics in hot compressed liquid nitrogen predicted by first-principles molecular dynamics, as well as the measured principal shock Hugoniot and double shock experimental data, albeit without shock cooling. Our results indicate that a purely molecular dissociation description of nitrogen chemistry under shock compression provides an incomplete picture and that short oligomers form in non-negligible quantities. This suggests that classical models representing the shock dissociation of nitrogen as a transition to an atomic fluid need to be revised to include reversible polymerization effects. Here, we investigate the effects of O2:N2 (1:1) as ambient gas as compared with pure N2 during activation annealing of Mg as p-type doping in GaN layers grown by MOCVD. The purpose is to understand the impact of O2 on the resulting free hole concentration and hole mobility using SIMS, XRD, STEM, AFM, and Hall effect measurements. Even though the presence of O2 in the ambient gas during annealing is very effective in reducing the H level of the Mg-doped GaN layers, the maximum achievable hole concentration and mobility is still higher with pure N2. The differences are explained by an in-diffusion of O to the GaN layer acting as n-dopant and, thus, giving rise to a compensation effect. The Mg–H complexes at substitutional (MgGa), i.e., the electrically active acceptor sites that provide free holes, are preferentially activated by annealing with N2 only as ambient gas, while annealing with O2:N2 (1:1) also dissociates electrically inactive Mg–H complexes resulting in much less residual H. At the lower growth pressure of 150 mbar compared to higher growth pressure of 300 mbar, an increasing carbon incorporation leads to a compensation effect drastically reducing the free hole concentration while the mobility is unaffected. We study properties of nitrogen at high pressure and temperature (100–120 GPa, 2000–3000 K) where molecular and polymeric phases compete both in solid and liquid phase. We employ ab initio MD simulations with the SCAN functional and study the pressure-induced polymerization in liquid nitrogen for system sizes up to 288 atoms in order to reduce finite-size effects. The transition is studied upon both compression and decompression, and at 3000 K, it is found to take place between 110 and 115 GPa, coming close to experimental data. We also simulate the molecular crystalline phase close to the melting line and analyze its structure. We show that the molecular crystal in this regime is highly disordered, in particular, due to pronounced orientational and also translational disorder of the molecules. Its short-range order and vibrational density of states are very close to those of the molecular liquid revealing that the system likely represents a plastic crystal with high entropy. This work studies the exhaustive rovibrational state-specific collision-induced dissociation properties of the N2+N system by QCT (quasi-classical trajectory) combined with a neural network method based on the ab initio PES recently published by Varga et al. [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 23, 26273 (2021)]. The QCT combined with a neural network for state-specific dissociation (QCT–NN–SSD) model is developed and used to predict the dissociation cross sections and their energy dependence on the thermal range from a sparsely sampled noisy dataset. It is conservatively estimated that using this method can reduce the cost of the calculation by 96.5%. The rate coefficient of thermal non-equilibrium between different energy modes is obtained by combining the QCT–NN–SSD model with the multi-temperature model. The results show that, for the equilibrium state, dissociation mainly occurs at high vibrational and moderately low rotational levels. When the system is in non-equilibrium, there is no obvious vibrational level preference and highly rotationally excited molecules play a major role in promoting the dissociation by compensating for the lack of vibrational energy. The use of neural network training to generate complete datasets based on limited and discrete data provides an economical and reliable way to obtain a complete kinetic database needed to accurately simulate non-equilibrium flows. We investigate the optimization of flexible tailored real-space Jastrow factors for use in the transcorrelated (TC) method in combination with highly accurate quantum chemistry methods, such as initiator full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC). Jastrow factors obtained by minimizing the variance of the TC reference energy are found to yield better, more consistent results than those obtained by minimizing the variational energy. We compute all-electron atomization energies for the challenging first-row molecules C2, CN, N2, and O2 and find that the TC method yields chemically accurate results using only the cc-pVTZ basis set, roughly matching the accuracy of non-TC calculations with the much larger cc-pV5Z basis set. We also investigate an approximation in which pure three-body excitations are neglected from the TC-FCIQMC dynamics, saving storage and computational costs, and show that it affects relative energies negligibly. Our results demonstrate that the combination of tailored real-space Jastrow factors with the multi-configurational TC-FCIQMC method provides a route to obtaining chemical accuracy using modest basis sets, obviating the need for basis-set extrapolation and composite techniques. We report an N2 based annealing treatment to passivate interface traps (Dit) in n- and p-type 4H-SiC. The process has the potential to replace the commonly used hazardous and expensive gas nitric oxide (NO). N2 postoxidation annealing reduces Dit in both the upper and lower halves of the 4H-SiC bandgap, with a greater impact at the valence band edge. N2 annealing at 1500 °C is observed to be more effective in passivating traps and positive fixed charges than NO annealing for p-type devices, whereas for n-type devices, the opposite is true. The breakdown voltages for these devices are found to be lower than that of NO annealed devices. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been performed to estimate the nitrogen areal density at the interface. Dit is measured as a function of nitrogen areal densities in the near interfacial regions for the different processes. Theoretical analysis through density functional theory is consistent with the measured Dit profiles by showing the generation of additional states near the valence band edge due to increased nitrogen concentration. In addition to reporting the effect of N2 annealing on both n- and p-type 4H-SiC, this work correlates the nitrogen areal densities at the interface to the Dit and explains the difference in Dit characteristics with nitrogen areal density between n- and p-type interfaces. Nitrate (NO3-) leaching is a serious health and ecological concern in global agroecosystems, particularly those under the application of agricultural-managed aquifer recharge (Ag-MAR); however, there is an absence of information on microbial controls affecting NO3- leaching outcomes. We combine natural dual isotopes of NO3- (15N/14N and 18O/16O) with metagenomics, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and a threshold indicator taxa analysis (TITAN) to investigate the activities, taxon profiles, and environmental controls of soil microbiome associated with NO3- leaching at different depths from Californian vineyards under Ag-MAR application. The isotopic signatures demonstrated a significant priming effect (P < 0.01) of Ag-MAR on denitrification activities in the topsoil (0-10 cm), with a 12-25-fold increase of 15N-NO3- and 18O-NO3- after the first 24 h of flooding, followed by a sharp decrease in the enrichment of both isotopes with ∼80% decline in denitrification activities thereafter. In contrast, deeper soils (60-100 cm) showed minimal or no denitrification activities over the course of Ag-MAR application, thus resulting in 10-20-fold of residual NO3- being leached. Metagenomic profiling and laboratory microcosm demonstrated that both nitrifying and denitrifying groups, responsible for controlling NO3- leaching, decreased in abundance and potential activity rates with soil depth. TITAN suggested that Nitrosocosmicus and Bradyrhizobium, as the major nitrifier and denitrifier, had the highest and lowest tipping points with regard to the NO3- changes (P < 0.05), respectively. Overall, our study provides new insight into specific depth limitations of microbial controls on soil NO3- leaching in agroecosystems.

Permafrost-affected ecosystems are subject to warming and thawing, which can increase the availability of subsurface nitrogen (N) with consequences in otherwise N-limited tundra and alpine vegetation. Here, we quantify the extent of warming and permafrost thawing and the corresponding effects on nitrogen availability and plant growth based on a 20-year survey across 14 sites on the Tibetan Plateau. The survey showed that most sites have been subject to warming and thawing and that the upper permafrost zone across all sites was rich in inorganic N, mainly as ammonium. We further explore the efficiency of plants to utilize 15N-labelled inorganic N over five years following 15N addition at the permafrost table far below the main root zone. The 15N experiment showed that deep-rooted plant species were able to utilize the labelled N. A SEM model suggests that changes in vegetation can be explained by both active layer warming and permafrost thawing and the associated changes in inorganic nitrogen availability. Our results highlight a feedback mechanism of climate warming, in which released plant-available N may favour deep-rooted plants. This can explain important changes in plant composition and growth across the sites on the Tibetan Plateau.

Trophic ecology and resource use are challenging to discern in migratory marine species, including sharks. However, effective management and conservation strategies depend on understanding these life history details. Here we investigate whether dental enameloid zinc isotope (δ66Znen) values can be used to infer intrapopulation differences in foraging ecology by comparing δ66Znen with same-tooth collagen carbon and nitrogen (δ13Ccoll, δ15Ncoll) values from critically endangered sand tiger sharks (Carcharias taurus) from Delaware Bay (USA). We document ontogeny and sex-related isotopic differences indicating distinct diet and habitat use at the time of tooth formation. Adult females have the most distinct isotopic niche, likely feeding on higher trophic level prey in a distinct habitat. This multi-proxy approach characterises an animal's isotopic niche in greater detail than traditional isotope analysis alone and shows that δ66Znen analysis can highlight intrapopulation dietary variability thereby informing conservation management and, due to good δ66Znen fossil tooth preservation, palaeoecological reconstructions.

Accurately detecting nitrogen (N) deficiency and determining the need for additional N fertilizer is a key challenge to achieving precise N management in many crops, including rice (Oryza sativa L.). Many remotely sensed vegetation indices (VIs) have shown promise in this regard; however, it is not well-known if VIs measured from different sensors can be used interchangeably. The objective of this study was to quantitatively test and compare the ability of VIs measured from an aerial and proximal sensor to predict the crop yield response to top-dress N fertilizer in rice. Nitrogen fertilizer response trials were established across two years (six site-years) throughout the Sacramento Valley rice-growing region of California. At panicle initiation (PI), unmanned aircraft system (UAS) Normalized Difference Red-Edge Index (NDREUAS) and GreenSeeker (GS) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVIGS) were measured and expressed as a sufficiency index (SI) (VI of N treatment divided by VI of adjacent N-enriched area). Following reflectance measurements, each plot was split into subplots with and without top-dress N fertilizer. All metrics evaluated in this study indicated that both NDREUAS and NDVIGS performed similarly with respect to predicting the rice yield response to top-dress N at PI. Utilizing SI measurements prior to top-dress N fertilizer application resulted in a 113% and 69% increase (for NDREUAS and NDVIGS, respectively) in the precision of the rice yield response differentiation compared to the effect of applying top-dress N without SI information considered. When the SI measured via NDREUAS and NDVIGS at PI was ≤0.97 and 0.96, top-dress N applications resulted in a significant (p < 0.05) increase in crop yield of 0.19 and 0.21 Mg ha-1, respectively. These results indicate that both aerial NDREUAS and proximal NDVIGS have the potential to accurately predict the rice yield response to PI top-dress N fertilizer in this system and could serve as the basis for developing a decision support tool for farmers that could potentially inform better N management and improve N use efficiency.

Nitrogen (N) is frequently limiting to plant growth, in part because most soil N is present as polymeric organic compounds that are not readily taken up by plants. Microbial depolymerization of these large macromolecular N-substrates gradually releases available inorganic N. While many studies have researched and modeled controls on soil organic matter formation and bulk N mineralization, the ecological-spatial, temporal and phylogenetic-patterns underlying organic N degradation remain unclear. We analyzed 48 time-resolved metatranscriptomes and quantified N-depolymerization gene expression to resolve differential expression by soil habitat and time in specific taxonomic groups and gene-based guilds. We observed much higher expression of extracellular serine-type proteases than other extracellular N-degrading enzymes, with protease expression of predatory bacteria declining with time and other taxonomic patterns driven by the presence (Gammaproteobacteria) or absence (Thermoproteota) of live roots and root detritus (Deltaproteobacteria and Fungi). The primary chitinase chit1 gene was more highly expressed by eukaryotes near root detritus, suggesting predation of fungi. In some lineages, increased gene expression over time suggests increased competitiveness with rhizosphere age (Chloroflexi). Phylotypes from some genera had protease expression patterns that could benefit plant N nutrition, for example, we identified a Janthinobacterium phylotype and two Burkholderiales that depolymerize organic N near young roots and a Rhizobacter with elevated protease levels near mature roots. These taxon-resolved gene expression results provide an ecological read-out of microbial interactions and controls on N dynamics in specific soil microhabitats and could be used to target potential plant N bioaugmentation strategies.

The quest for affordable and price-stable alternatives for nickel as the main austenitizing alloying element is pushing the stainless steel industries to develop new types of Ni-lean austenitic stainless steels. This work focuses on the challenges of designing austenitic stainless steels with appreciable nitrogen content using computational methods, which can still be produced at 1 atm N2 pressure and thermomechanically processed without excessive cracking or N2 degassing. CALPHAD-based computational tools enabled the identification of promising alloys by high-throughput screening from more than 2000 candidates based on predefined criteria considering composition (Ni-poor, N-rich), phase stability (austenite), degassing (far from N2 loss from liquid or solid phase), cost (Ni-lean), and pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN > AISI 201 stainless steel). The resulting alloys exhibited an austenitic microstructure with dispersed micrometric and nanometric aluminum nitrides (AlN) precipitates. Even with the occurrence of appreciable AIN precipitates, hot rolling was performed without cracking, resulting in equiaxed austenitic grains. The mechanical properties of the developed alloys exceeded those of AISI 201 stainless steel in terms of hardness, yield strength, and ultimate tensile strength, with values of 304 HV, 534 MPa, and 953 MPa, respectively, yet with considerable ductility (∼40% elongation). Even in the presence of AlN that pick up some of the nitrogen from solid solution, the corrosion resistance of the developed alloy was superior to the AISI 201 stainless steel. This research provides valuable insights for developing and processing high-nitrogen austenitic stainless steels to compete with 201 and 304 stainless steels in terms of mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.
